History of Tap Dancing
Information about the history of tap dancing.
Tap dancing is a percussive dance art form that originated in the United States. It evolved over time as the immigrants from many different countries immigrated to the United States and lived in multi-ethnic communities. Some of those immigrants, particularly those from Africa, were transported to the American continent involuntarily, as victims of the slave trade.
Tap dancing can trace its origins to the ethnic percussive dances of several different cultures. Among the roots of tap dancing are the tribal dances of Africa and the clog dances, hornpipe dances, and jigs of Scotland, Ireland, and England.
