The star of the inaugural LA Tap Festival was suppose to be Gregory Hines, but the event ended up being a tribute to him because Hines died of cancer on August 9, 2003. Guest artist Leonard "Shim Sham Shimmy" Reed (1907-2004) taught with a broken foot at the 2003 LA Tap Fest.
