The two main styles of modern tap dancing are Broadway tap and Rhythm tap. The two styles have many similarities and some significant differences.

The differences between the two styles can be summarized by noting that Broadway style tap is musical theater style show dancing and rhythm style tap uses tap dancing as a percussive musical instrument, similar to playing the drums.

Broadway tap is more focused on the way a dance looks and rhythm tap is more focused on the way a dance sounds, however those are only broad generalizations, because of course all tap dancers care about how they look and sound.
